As part of an ongoing tour by the FIFA President of several African countries, in front of a packed stadium in Lubumbashi, Congo DR, Team FIFA took on Team TP Mazembe at the latter’s home stadium in a match celebrating the 80th anniversary of the club’s creation on Wednesday night.
As they walked onto the pitch, Team FIFA, which included the FIFA and CAF Presidents, FIFA Council Member and President of the DRC Football Association Constant Omari, TP Mazembe President Moïse Katumbi, FIFA Legend and Special Advisor to CAF President Samuel Eto’o, FIFA Foundation CEO and Legend Youri Djorkaeff and FIFA Deputy Secretary General Mattias Grafström, were greeted by a roar from the packed stadium.
An early goal was scored by Youri Djorkaeff, with a second being added by FIFA President Infantino, resulting from a pass from Samuel Eto’o. Team TP Mazembe fought back in the second half, halving the deficit before the final whistle.
Following the match Infantino said: “I am simply lost for words. This stadium, the fans, the ambience, the welcome, it’s amazing. Tonight’s match, celebrating TP Mazembe’s 80th anniversary, is a memory I will truly cherish.”
Further activities are planned tomorrow in DRC, before the FIFA-CAF delegation will continue its African tour to Angola.
